Are you a supertaster?
Do you hate coffee? Do beer and bitter veggies make you gag? Well…you might be a supertaster my friend!
I just found out about this and thought it was pretty amazing. It turns out we don’t all taste things the same way.
Some of folks have more taste buds or fungiform papillae on their tongues. That means they experience taste in a more intense way. In particular, so-called supertasters are turned off by more bitter tasting foods like grapefruit or spinach.
So the picky-eaters in your family may have actually been born that way.
Estimates suggest about 25% of us are supertasters, 50% are medium-tasters, and another 25% are non-tasters. For the non-taster, if it’s bitter or sweet it doesn’t really matter because it’s all kind of bland anyway. These are the folks who really love spicy food and can chew on a hot pepper like it’s no big deal.
There’s still more being discovered about the science of taste. A recent study found supertasters are more likely to use a lot of salt on their food. That’s because salt actually cuts down on the bitter flavor.
Of course, your personal taste extends to much more than what you like to chew on at dinner. We all have our own personal style or “taste” in clothes. We say certain bands match our “taste” in music; you can even have your own “taste” in personal checks!
Oh, there it is! Well give me a break…we don’t call it the Checks Blog for nothing.
