When I was 10 years-old, my family moved from a somewhat suburban neighborhood to an old farmhouse out in the country that my dad worked to remodel.
We weren’t farmers. We didn’t have a huge plot of land – just 1.5 acres, a big vegetable garden and a yard that was perfect for three-on-three football games. We even had goalposts made out of PVC pipe and painted yellow.
As a kid, there were a lot things I enjoyed about living in the country: Goofing around in abandoned barns, exploring nature, bonfires at night. As a young teenager, there were a lot of things I hated about it: Feeling like I was cut off from civilizations, having to ask friends with their driver’s license for a ride and then pay them gas money, the smell of cow manure.
Now as an adult with my own family, I’m feeling the same urge my parents must have felt when they moved to a more rural setting.
So what is it about the country that captivates so many of us?
There are a lot of reasons country living is so attractive. Some people think it’s a peaceful place to live. Others say it’s safer than the big city. Still others live in the country because they make their living off the land.
Country decorating is very popular. It allows us to bring a little bit of the countryside into our homes or apartments without leaving behind the convenience of living in a metropolitan area.
