Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect? It’s an extremely interesting concept.
The idea is based on chaos theory and sensitive dependence on initial conditions. To put it simply, it’s the belief that small changes – like the flapping of a butterfly’s wings – can bring about very large changes – like altering the course of history in the world.
What an amazing notion. That something so seemingly insignificant could have such a major impact on the lives of everyone on the planet.
While the idea has been the focus of a lot of science fiction in pop culture, there is actually real science and math behind it.
The term “butterfly effect” is actually credited to a mathematician and meteorologist by the name of Edward Lorenz. Lorenz theorized that the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil could potentially cause tiny changes in the atmosphere that would create a tornado in Texas.

There’s even a movie that’s actually called The Butterfly Effect starring Twitter king Ashton Kutcher.
The first time the idea was ever used in fiction was in a short story by Ray Bradbury about time travel called “A Sound of Thunder.” In the story, the killing of a butterfly in prehistoric times causes the future to change.
