It’s that time of year already!
You can tell by all the TV advertisements pushing school supplies and hip new back to school fashions that it won’t be long before the school bus pulls up and the kids head out!
Summer is winding down and kids are getting ready to hit the books once again. Maybe that’s a bit of a relief for your household, or maybe you feel like the summer flew by far too quickly.
Either way – going back to school can mean your personal finances take a bit of a hit.
Using the free check register you get from Check Advantage whenever you order checks online will help you keep track of all those back to school expenditures.
The National Retail Federation conducted a survey indicating the average American family plans to spend $606 on back to school purchases this year. That’s up from $549 in 2009.
While most other surveys also indicate an increase in spending with most families planning to cough up more cash this year than last, there are also a few that show people are still keeping a tight grip on their purses and wallets.
A poll conducted by the NPD Group found 38% plan to spend less and only 22 plan to spend more. An even wider margin comes from an Ipsos Poll in which 68% of those questioned said they plan to spend less than last year.
Of course there are some things that are needs and some things that are wants or luxuries – in back to school shopping as with any sort of spending.
It may be that the average family actually needs to spend more this season because in the previous two years so many people were spending conservatively. The fact is – kids grow out of things, they wear things out and use things up. That’s why many families may have no choice but to spend a little more.
And the spending doesn’t stop after the school year starts. That’s when personal checks become even more necessary to pay for school expenses.
Think about all the little things you’ll have to pay for as you go through the school year. Small payments for things like field trips, paying fees for participating in school sports, and of course keeping the lunch money account from going into the negative.
In most cases, you’re going to need to use personal checks to pay for these things. You probably won’t have the cash in your wallet, and you probably won’t want to send the kids off with your credit card – even if that is a possibility.
That’s why checks are a must-have for every parent of school children.
