You’ve probably heard that 70% of this big blue planet is covered in water.
It’s what makes life on earth possible. But even though there is an abundance of H2O all around us – there’s still something special about being at the water’s edge.
Those of us who are landlocked plan for months to take vacations along the ocean, or wait all winter for weekends on the lake.
Waterfront property is always highly valued – even if it means your home is in danger of being washed away by a flood.
People who live near the ocean and move inland start to miss the sound of the waves and may even struggle to fall asleep without it.
What’s so special about the water? Why does it seem to be part of human nature to seek it out?
When we started taking photographs and creating designs for personal checks in our On the Water Checks category, the answer started to become crystal clear.
Water has represented so many things to so many people. When you visit a body of water – whether it’s the sea, one of the Great Lakes, a rushing river or even a tiny peaceful pond – you’ll find the ability to clear your head and be content for at least the time being.
Browse through our collection of personal checks featuring scenic views of the water and you’ll see exactly what we mean. Check out personal check designs like the Ocean Waves Personal Checks or the Tropical Coastline Personal Checks.
Different studies on water reveal some very interesting theories. Neuroscientist Michael Crawford of the University of North London believes that as our ancestors gravitated toward the water, their intelligence grew.
Crawford theorizes that as homo sapiens living near bodies of water started consuming fish and other seafood, the omega-3 fatty acids promoted brain cell growth. Scientist have also conducted studies indicating that people who eat more fish are less likely to suffer from depression.
This one is a little out there – but there is a Japanese man name Masaru Emoto who claims that the crystalline structure of water can be affected by human words and thoughts. He conducted experiments which allegedly show that water reacts to positive and negative words and imagery. However, his theories have not been scientifically proven and Emoto also sells what he calls “Indigo Water” in 8 ounce bottles.
Whether Masaru Emoto is selling pseudoscience or made a groundbreaking discovery – it really doesn’t make a difference. The fact is – water is important to all living creatures no matter what. Not only is the earth 70% water – our human bodies are also 60 to 70% H2O!
Voyages on the water have brought us on adventures to new worlds. The water gives us a place to seek out thrills on surfboards, sailboats and inflatable rafts. Quiet places by the water give us the chance to relax and reflect while finding peace and serenity.
