Business Checks – Quicken vs. QuickBooks

Quicken or QuickBooks

by Kasey Steinbrinck

It’s a pretty common question concerning small business accounting practices – “What is better…Quicken or QuickBooks financial software?”

Both programs are extremely popular for keeping track of finances for both businesses and households. But should you choose one or the other when it comes to o picking the best thing for your company?

Well get ready – because the gloves are coming off!

We get the answer from the author of both “Quicken for Dummies” and “QuickBooks for Dummies.”

Not that we don’t think you guys are super smart!

CPA and best-selling author Stephen Nelson says he gets the QuickBooks or Quicken question all the time. Nelson thinks that any accounting software you use for business should be able to accomplish these three tasks.

1. It should let you, your investors, your bank and the IRS accurately measure your profits and financial stability.

2. It should produce necessary business forms including business checks, invoices, customer statements etc.

3. It should allow you to keep precise records of the assets and liabilities of your business.

Nelson thinks QuickBooks is the clear winner when it comes to the top software programs for small business. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use Quicken.

The biggest difference is where Quicken stacks up with Task No. 2. Quicken can only produce two types of forms – checks and invoices. Nelson says that would work just fine for a company that provides a service and not products.

However, if your small business needs to produce things such as customer receipts, purchase orders and other forms – Nelson thinks you’re better off using QuickBooks.

QuickBooks is also preferred if you need to keep more detailed records of anything besides just the balance of your checking account. Nelson reminds us that QuickBooks includes a tool to help you track inventory and better features for automating tasks like payroll and finance charge calculations.
